PRAGUE METRO ROLLING STOCK

R1

This type of rolling stock remains unknown by Prague metro travellers, because it was never taken into service. It was built by ČKD Prague as a modern, light metro vehicle, far more advanced in design and technology than the Soviet Ečs trains. Two prototypes of this type were built, but because of a (probably politically motivated) crash between them, the prototypes were later scrapped.

EČS

Ečs is the oldest type of rolling stock of the Prague Metro. It was built in the Soviet Union, as well as the later 81-71 type. Ečs and 81-71 are similar, but Ečs has a slightly different design and less power than its successor. The Ečs trains entered service with the opening of the prague Metro, and they only stayed on line C (and on line A for a short period in 1978). Their last year of service was 1996, when the majority of the Ečs trains were also scrapped. To this day, 4 Ečs carriages remain preserved. Three in a historical train which is sometimes used at celebrations and other special events, and one carriage in the Prague Public Transport Museum.

81-71

The 81-71 type used to be the most frequent type of rolling stock in the Prague Metro. It was the successor of Ečs with more powerful engines.  In 2009, 8171 stopped operating on its last line, line B. Most 8171 trains have been refurbished, and are now known as type 8171M. The remaining trains will be refurbished for the needs of the new stretch of line A, and the remaining ones will be scrapped.

81-71M

Typ 81-71M is a refurbished version of the 8171 rolling stock. The design of the front and the interiors gives these trains a more modern look. They have been in service since 1997 and nowadays, they are the only type of trains on line A and on line B. However, the trains have been criticized for making too much noise while braking.

M1

The M1 rolling stock is the newest and most modern type of the Prague Metro. It is the only type operating on line C. It is the only type of rolling stock in the history of the Prague Metro to be constructed in the Czech Republic. The cars were made in the Siemens factory near the Zličín depot. In general, the cars have quality design, which fits line C, so that the cars are lighter to cause less damage to the metro bridge, Nuselský Most.
